Director of Research:

 

William Dowell is currently Media and Information Coordinator, CARE Emergency Group, Geneva, Switzerland. His work with CARE takes him around the world; including in 2005, trips to Pakistan as part of a team for earthquake relief.

From 2001 to 2005, he was a Visiting Scholar at New York University in the Department of Journalism, and editor of the Global Beat, the online journal of The Center for War, Peace, and News Media.

From 1989 to 2001, William was a staff correspondent and bureau chief for Time Magazine, with postings in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and New York. William has also contributed reporting to National Geographic Television, and prior to joining Time, was based in Paris covering stories worldwide for NBC and ABC. He has conducted dozens of interviews with domestic and international leaders in business and politics, including Kofi Annan, George Soros, Benazir Bhutto, and Shekh Omar Abdel Rahman.

William has also worked on projects funded by the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs in Eastern Europe, and in international conflict resolution with the Henri Dunant Center.

With Francois Burgat, he is co-author of "The Islamic Movement in North Africa" (U. Texas Press, 1997)

He served from 1967 to 1969 in the US Army with the 525th Military Intelligence Group stationed in Binh Long Province, Vietnam.

He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
